ROME HOTEL HOMS
PIAZZA NAVONA
Arrival Departure

The land of the stadium was paved in the mid 1600's but ruins of Domitian's stadium can still be seen around the area. The origins of Piazza Navona as we see it today, began to take form during the papacy of Pope Innocent X who, along with the realization of the square, wanted to build the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.
The façade of the church was designed by Borromini in style Baroque but the main attraction of the piazza is the famous fountain created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini; Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fountain of the Four Rivers. The four rivers are represented by figures of four different continents- - the Danube, Ganges, Nile, and Rio della Plata. An obelisk, originally located at the Massenzio Circus, are supported by the statues found at the base.
Another two fountains can also be seen in Piazza Navona; the Fontana di Nettuno or Fountain of Neptune done by Giacomo della Porta in 1576 and the Fontana del Moro or Moor fountain also done by della Porta. The statue in the middle of a Moor holding a dolphin was designed by Bernini and added later and the tritons in the fountain were added later as well, in the 19th century.
Piazza Navona boasts a long history as a host to many events from horseracing to theatrical productions as well as being the site for the local market place. A very interesting place to visit in Rome.
